Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture should not hurt. Sometimes you may feel a dull ache or radiating sensation as the muscle grabs onto the needle and creates a nervous system response. However, nothing should feel sharp, stabbing, or burning and if at any point you are uncomfortable let your practitioner know and she will remove the needle.

How will I feel after acupuncture?

Many patients jokingly call how they feel after their treatment the "acu high" because they are so relaxed and euphoric. Acupuncture brings the body out of the fight/flight response and into the rest/digest system, so generally patients feel much calmer than when they walked in. If you are someone who runs on stress hormones, you may feel tired after acupuncture for the first few sessions since you are experiencing your body without all the adrenaline released from stress.

How often do I need to come in for acupuncture?

Acupuncture is like exercise. Each treatment builds on the previous one, and consistency is key, especially in the beginning. The goal is to chip away at the problem to make improvements each week. The longer you’ve had a problem, the longer it is likely going to take to resolve. Acute, recent symptoms typically resolve most quickly. Typically you will see your acupuncturist 2x/week for 2-4 weeks then gradually put more time in between appointments until you are on a maintenance or "as needed" schedule.

Does microneedling hurt?

Microneedling does not hurt. A thin layer of lidocaine will be applied to numb the first layer of your skin. Most patients describe microneedling as being similar to microdermabrasion or strong exfoliation.

How will I feel after microneedling?

You can expect to be red after microneedling with your skin feeling a little tight and sensitive for about 12 hours.  We recommend babying your skin for the first 24 hours to allow it to fully heal, meaning discontinuing the use of any harsh topicals like retinols or acne products, staying out of the sun, and waiting to workout or sweat. All patients receive an after-care handout at the time of their first appointment.

How often do I need to come in for microneedling?

Most patients notice a difference in the days and weeks after their first session as the collagen and elastin is stimulated in their face. However, we recommend a series of 5 treatments over 5 months for best results especially if the goal is to decrease wrinkles, acne scars, or age spots. From there, patients schedule maintenance treatments as needed or do a full series once per year.

Are there any side effects with acupuncture or microneedling?

Side effects are rare for either treatment but in some cases acupuncture can cause bruising (especially if being preformed on the face or abdomen), swelling at the needle site, or small amounts of bleeding. These issues typically resolve in a couple days and are not serious. Microneedling occasionally causes redness and sensitivity that lasts longer than 24 hours, swelling, or dryness. Again, these usually resolve within a few days.
