Non-Toxic Living Guide

Updated: Oct 1

So many of the products we use in our homes or on our bodies contain harsh chemicals, fragrances, and preservatives that can settle in our tissues and wreak havoc on our health. Some of the problems associated with using conventional products are:

  • Hormone disruption from synthetic materials called endocrine disruptors which mimic the effects of our actual hormones. This can lead to fertility issues, irregular cycles, and estrogen dominance

  • Skin or lung irritation, especially if you're prone to allergies or asthma

  • Overburden on the liver because it has to process these synthetic materials

Note that some chemicals found in household products contain carcinogens meaning they could be linked to cancer.

Cleaning products, personal care items, makeup…. I’ve tried it all so you don’t have to. One of the hardest parts of finding clean, non toxic products to use at home or on your body is that you want them to actually work! Here’s a list of some of the cleanest, non tox brands that will make you wish you switched a lot sooner.

(none of these are sponsored or ads, this is just a list I’ve compiled over the last 10 years while on my mission to create a non-toxic environment in my home)

Laundry, dish soap, and dishwasher detergent: Dropps

Laundry and dish soap are two of the most important household items you want to swap for a cleaner version because your skin is in contact with your clothes all day and your sheets at night, and you consume food off of your dishes. This brand is amazing and smells great.

Other laundry options: Molly's Suds for pourable liquid detergent and Blueland Oxy Laundry Boost Powder for stains/workout gear/whites

Bug repellent: Golden Hour deet-free repellent from Kinfield

Home hack: you can make your own by combining 1/3 c coconut oil and 20 drops of peppermint essential oil to store in the fridge (learned this from Martha Stewart).

If you do get bitten, use “The Bug Bite Thing” to stop itching and remove swelling. It works SO WELL and uses zero chemicals.

Deodorant: Curie Full Body Deodorant Spray

This spray contains probiotics which naturally balance your skin’s microbiome, and eliminate odor.

Home hack: I’m a fan of slicing a lime wedge and rubbing the juice on my armpits. You can keep your lime in a container in the fridge and use as needed for 3 days.

I also do an underarm mask 1-2 times per week which helps pull out impurities from pores which decreases the need for deodorant and helps with razor burn. My fav is Megababe Happy Pits Detoxifying Underarm Mask.

Household disinfectant: BrioTech

I buy the gallon size at home depot and make a diluted 50/50 mixture with filtered water in a reusable spray bottle. BrioTech is 100x stronger than bleach but is non-toxic so you can use it on your toilet, counter tops, cutting boards, and can even wash veggies with it.

Body wash: Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Liquid Soap

This soap is totally non-tox and is safe for the whole family to use. The bottle contains recipes on the side showing other uses for it around the house as well.

Chapstick and lipgloss: Dr. Bronner’s Organic Lip Balm and CLEARSTEM lips and Cutes Lip Gloss

Skincare: CLEARSTEM

Makes non-tox clinical strength skincare which is anti- aging and non-pore clogging. The majority of these products are also safe to use during pregnancy. When I say I am obsessed with this entire line....

Shampoo/conditioner: Moerie, Prose, or CLEARSTEM

Face makeup/foundation: Super Serum Skin Tint spf 40 by Ilia

This makeup has hyaluronic acid in it which locks in moisture and doesn’t contain any inflammatory oils. It matches skin perfectly and is a full coverage mineral sunscreen.

Sunscreen: Babo Botanicals

Physical barrier zinc sunscreen that does not leave a white tint.

Eye makeup: Thrive Causemetics

I use their liquid/solid eyeliner, eyeshadow, and liquid extension mascara and it’s better than any department store makeup I’ve ever tried. It stays on, looks amazing, and the mascara gives a false-eyelash look.

Fake Tanner: Beauty By Earth

This fake tanner doesn't streak and gives a gorgeous glow that is safe. I recommend getting the exfoliator glove and application mit. You can buy either foam or lotion, both work great.

Menstrual cup- Saalt soft

Menstrual cups are not only helpful for the environment, but they are made out of medical-grade silicone which is completely non toxic. Many tampons contain bleached cotton or chemicals in their core. Anything that comes into contact with the vaginal membrane gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream so it's important to be mindful what products you use.

Period panties/washable pads- Period. at www.period.co

This company makes affordable non toxic washable panties and liners which you can just toss in the laundry.

Toothpaste- Boka

Fluoride can be harmful to your thyroid so I recommend toothpaste with hydroxyapatite instead. It remineralizes your teeth preventing cavities and protects your enamel without the negative side effects. Boka is my favorite brand with hydroxyapatite.

Castor oil pack- Queen of the Thrones

Castor oil packs help detox your liver/colon and this website sells non-toxic packs with clean castor oil packaged in amber glass (meaning it wont go rancid or absorb plastic from it's container).

Blue Light Blockers- Spectra479

Blue light blockers are excellent for increasing quality of sleep because they filter out melatonin-disrupting light from screens. I recommend putting these on every evening around 9:00pm and watch your sleep improve.

Air filter- Air Doctor

This air filter cleans the air in your home getting rid of allergens, chemicals, and VOCs.

Water filter- Boroux or Aquatru

Your Brita or fridge filter does not get rid of heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, or bacteria in tap water, the above do.
